Taking good care of your teeth and gums is an important part of life. A beautiful smile not only looks good, but it is also an indicator of your overall health. Studies have shown that systemic illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, are directly linked to oral health complications like periodontal (gum) disease. At Mission Hills Periodontics, our goal is to help you maintain excellent oral health and improve your overall quality of life. Our services include preventive, restorative, cosmetic, and emergency dentistry. If you are in need of any professional dental treatment, you have come to the right place!
If you are diagnosed with moderate to severe periodontal disease, we may recommend a “deep” cleaning, also known as a scaling and root planing. Scaling and root planing can help get your gums back to a healthier state.
No longer are we using arcane methods to create artificial teeth. Now, we are able, through computer design, to manufacture artificial teeth to exact specifications to look and feel just like natural teeth.
One such improvement is known as the All-on-4 treatment concept. Although it has been around for a few decades it is still considered relatively new to the field. A reliable and inexpensive solution for artificial teeth, it has become a popular procedure.
Frenectomy procedures come in a wide variety. They all involve removing an unwanted bit of tissue called a frenulum. Considered common, it is typically done for orthodontic reasons to improve the functionality of the patient's mouth. When a frenulum is removed from the upper lip, it is known as a labial frenectomy. If it is removed from beneath the tongue it is labeled a lingual frenectomy.
When it is medically necessary to perform contouring, it may be due to advanced gum disease. In most cases, staff will attempt to treat gum disease with nonsurgical options. They will attempt to use an antibiotic course to eradicate the bacterial infection or a deep cleaning by staff before moving to surgically remove it.
When a patient's gums begin to pull away from the base of the tooth, it can expose the root and lead to oversensitivity to both hot and cold foods and drinks. While recession can affect patients, gradually it may get to a point where it simply cannot be tolerated any longer. If a patient can no longer tolerate the discomfort, that is where gum grafting procedures can help. They can stabilize supportive gum tissue and maintain a healthy environment to help save the natural tooth.
Periodontal disease, an infection caused by bacterial plaque, is by far the leading cause of gum recession. If left untreated, this infection will spread to the gum tissues, connective ligaments, and supportive bone. The destruction of your gums can leave the roots of your teeth exposed. Exposed roots can result in tooth decay and severe sensitivity issues when eating hot and cold foods.
The main goal of soft tissue grafting is to cover your exposed roots and improve your existing gum tissues. The procedure can help prevent additional recession and bone deterioration.
An extraction is the removal of a tooth from the gum tissue. There are simple extractions and surgical extractions. With a simple extraction, our office will use a numbing agent and apply it to the gum and tooth to deaden the sensation. With this type of extraction, our office will gently remove the tooth, drawing it from the socket holding it.
