Bone Regeneration

Dental bone graft in the gum, covered by a protective membrane placed between two teeth. Some patients experience infections or trauma to their jawbones. Whether from periodontal disease, extraction, or injury, bone loss can occur and these bones are important to our oral health. It is important to maintain your bones or restore bone loss in your mouth.

Bone regeneration is the physical process of regrowing or regenerating bone. This is a surgical procedure that requires anesthesia. Let our team at Mission Hills Periodontics help you with this procedure.

What Causes Bone Loss

Many patients do not realize that jawbones need constant pressure in order to remain strong. This pressure is a normal stimulation from the action or biting or chewing. This pressure is absent if a patient is missing a tooth. When the bone no longer has that pressure or stimulation, then the bone tissue can begin to resorb.

Other causes can include dental trauma due to an injury, viral infection, bacteria, or even cancerous lesions. When infections reach the jawbone, it can begin to cause deterioration and accelerate bone loss.

Bone Regeneration

The regeneration process works to stimulate bone growth and rebuild the lost material to allow for other restorative dental procedures to take place. A bone graft, harvested from either the patient themselves or from a donor, is secured to the site where bone growth is necessary. As the graft takes hold and begins to combine with the patient's existing tissue, bone regeneration begins.

A small incision is made along the gums so the bone can be exposed. The gums and bone are both examined before the graft is placed to make sure there is no infection that might hinder the grafting process. If an infection is discovered, it will have to be properly dealt with before the grafting process can continue.

Once exposed, the grafting material is applied, and then the gum tissue is drawn over it and sutured in place. Bone regeneration procedures only take one office visit to complete. It is performed under anesthesia to ensure the comfort of the patient during the procedure.

Why Bone Regeneration?

Bone regeneration can solve so many issues that can diminish the patient's oral health as well as their overall health. Because bone loss is progressive, if not treated it can be disastrous. A preventative process, bone regeneration can help to preserve not only the underlying bone and gum structure but can actually help with other dental problems by making the mouth healthier.

While most times, the process is considered restorative, it can also be cosmetic in nature. This helps maintain the patient's appearance by keeping their cheeks and lips supported.

Most frequently associated with dental implants, bone regeneration can provide the additional bone mass necessary to give patients the option to get dental implants. Because they are secured into the jawbones, it is important patients have adequate bone structure.

If you have suffered bone loss, no matter the cause, and have been told you are not a good candidate for dental implants, bone regeneration might be the answer.
